THE SMOKESTONE STORY SO FAR...
From a garage to a bike brand.
Welcome to Smokestone Bikes, based in Gloucestershire.
We're rider-owned and built on decades of mountain biking experience. From racing at the highest level to more than 40 years of wheel building, frame building and workshop knowledge, everything we do is driven by a genuine passion for creating bikes we'd want to ride ourselves.
Our roots go back to the early 1990s with our original company, Bigfoot UK, where we produced aluminium mountain bike frames in the Malvern Hills.
The name Smokestone has a very personal meaning. It comes from a close friend who sadly passed away just before our first prototype was produced. "Smokestone" was his nickname, and it felt only right to keep his memory alive by naming our first frame after him – the Bigfoot Smokestone.
Years later, following a company takeover, the name was lost. Although the new owners never really did anything with it, when it finally became available again, it returned to where it belonged. That's when the Smokestone brand was reborn.
A lot has changed since those early days, but our philosophy hasn't.
We still believe in building proper, go-anywhere mountain bikes that are made to be ridden hard and built to last. We don't chase fashion or short-lived trends. We build bikes you'll still be proud to own and ride many years from now.
Our first frame under the revived Smokestone name was the Henderson. The name came from a suggestion by one of our Facebook followers. Since our original company was called Bigfoot, they suggested Henderson as a nod to the film Harry and the Hendersons. Thanks, Gordon!
Today, every Smokestone frame is designed in-house before being manufactured by carefully selected partners in the Far East whose craftsmanship and quality consistently meet our high standards. Once completed, every frame is shipped to us for inspection before becoming part of a custom build.
As the brand has grown, so has our range. Alongside aluminium, we've introduced titanium frames, giving riders even more choice. Because every titanium frame is built to order, we can often tailor the geometry to suit individual riders, creating a bike that fits perfectly rather than forcing the rider to adapt to the bike.
We're still a small company, and we like it that way. It allows us to concentrate on what matters most: designing distinctive bikes, paying attention to the details, and giving every customer the kind of personal service that's becoming increasingly rare.
Thanks for being part of the Smokestone story. We hope you'll enjoy the ride as much as we have.
